Passwords

Well, passwords are like money. You need them for pretty much everything you do. Especially online, but are they really that important? Do banks actually are more secure asking you personal questions? If that's the case, why amazon just ask you for your email for getting an account ?

Today, I'm just gonna wonder about this matter because it just jumped into my head, so I hope my random ideas come together to this hmm I would say very common matter.

I think the main problem with passwords, especially on banks websites is that they don't let you generate random passwords from software like keepass, therefore, they babysit you assuming that you're not capable of choosing a competent password. This turns out kind of strange because that actually becomes true. Many people think that passwords like "PASSWORD" "1234567890" "0987654321" actually are secure because they're so obvious that nobody would guess. The sad true, is that's not true they're so obvious that make them the easiest target for hackers or any thief or person who try to get into your personal issues.

At the same time, do gathering personal information actually help you being safer online? Well, my personal answer is no because a strong password can be broken because of this questions if you are tried to be robbed by a family member or something like that. This security question in any case are so standarized that the answers might be picked up one by one until you get the right one because many banks still have the lack of common sense of not blocking your account after 20 or so failed attempts to log in. Which following some sort of mathematical formula probably are more than enough for getting into the right password.

Amazon just use your email and encrypt your information, That's not any safer than using security questions, but that doesn't make it any weaker to safeguard your information.

I think the principal matters with passwords is that you must learn to follow some simple rulings so they get hard to discover, but easy to remember. After all, if you're accused of some sort of crime you will have to spit out your passwords so the police or whoever in charge can go through your precious secrets and see what's going on there :P

In any case, here are some suggestions for choosing your passwords, and this link take you to a list of passwords which are by far too common that you should avoid them all the time.

  • Don't choose your any particular name that's by far too obvious.
  • Use combination of numbers and letters and probably some punctuation
  • Don't put a sticky on your computer with your passwords
  • Don't label the sticky note pointing out is your passwords
  • NEVER USE "PASSWORD" AS YOUR PASSWORD
  • If you decide to use a common name, better use punctuation and some numbers so you distort it.
  • Use keepass or any other password manager which will encrypt your passwords for everything in your computer and you will just have to remember one password.
  • Don't use the same password for all of your accounts, that's a terrible mistake if somebody steal it that person will have access to more that one thing.
I hope you enjoyed the short post and have a great week ;)
