Oracle V. Google

Today, I read the news that Oracle is suing Google over API patents. That's like saying that Sony is suing you for buying a CD and listening on track 10 without paying respective copyright loyalties.

In any case, the story goes around this issue where Oracle which is the owner of Java is suing the Android system because some of its API makes it to work smoothly through different hardware which is what Android actually does and made it so popular.

The demand goes over the fact that Android is an open-source system, therefore is free to use and modify for everybody, but Oracle says that the fact is free makes Java less appealing to be used because there's no reason for getting any remuneration out of it.

As you might think, I find that completely ridiculous. I just used the same example that it is used on the news article. Buying a new CD and being charged because you are hearing track 10. Oracle position here is on the wrong end, and they're asking for one billion dollars which is not the worst part, but if they win the open structure of Android as we all know it might come to an immediate end.

The fact that all the developers for Android will have to rewrite their code, so it accomplishes with Oracles patent rights might end up with Android losing track on its Play Store, so many popular apps might stop to exist on Android, and even worst it will give Apple more motives for continuing with its closed system for managing everything related with their products. It would be like a way of diminishing free products because they are not as stable as proprietary ones.

For the user, it also will mean that it will have to download again all of its apps because they will be rewritten and probably it won't get all of them back because it depends of the developers to rewrite or just let it die.

At the end, I just hope Google win this new patent fight, especially considering that if they loose they won't be the only ones affected. It will be a hard hit for the open source systems and all of the enthusiast users and developers of Android.

Thanks for reading the Metal Grunge have a great week.
